SportsImages > LegUpPhotos  > Art > Boxing Art By Chris Guzman
I've always loved boxing for it's purity. True, the business end is highly tarnished, but once that bell rings, it's just one man against one man. My goal with this series of works is to capture the persona of the fighter as a person, not just as a pitchman or advertising image. Sometimes I think I get as much enjoyment out of seeing the fighters' reaction to the painting as I get from actually creating it. I usually approach them unannounced at a press conference or Hall of Fame engagement. . . .their face when they realize that someone took the time to immortalize their image in a piece of artwork is worth all the hours of painting, traveling, and waiting. More times than not, the fighter wants to HAVE the piece, rather than autograph it for me, which was my initial intention; to make a truly unique autograph showpiece. I've often considered that the piece isn't complete until the subject actually "endorses" it with their personal autograph. Lately, I've been commissioning pieces for the personal collections of these awesome warriors. . . we'll see where this takes me. Thanks for looking, Chris Guzman

LOOK FOR MY LATEST PIECES: Of course, my radio show will be represented at the International Boxing Hall of Fame Induction Weekend the second weekend in June for Lewis's induction. I will be selling prints of my "LENNOX: Undisputed" piece at the Canastota High School Boxing Memorabilia Show on Saturday, June 13. Also, prints of "PAUL WILLIAMS" and my table full of hand-painted boxing gloves will be stuffed to the gills with good deals on original art. . . .perfect for autographs from the boxing celebrities present during the weekend. See you there! CG

LegUpPhotos > LENNOX LEWIS by Chris Guzman. The greatest heavyweight of the last twenty years. . . Lennox Lewis. Is he from Jamaica, England, or Canada? Who knows. . .but this man dominated the heavyweight division like no one since Ali. Known as the last UNDISPUTED heavyweight champion the sport has had, Lewis is being inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in June '09.
LegUpPhotos > "MIKE. . . MEET MR. LEWIS" Hand-painted glove by Chris Guzman. Authentic Everlast "everhide" glove, hand-painted original piece. *** I can paint any image you'd like on a similar glove for $60 (shipping included), and these are PERFECT for a personal signature by Lennox, who will be appearing at the IBHOF Induction Weekend in June.

LegUpPhotos > PAUL "THE PUNISHER" WILLIAMS by Chris Guzman. Is he a welterweight? Is he a junior middleweight? Is he a middleweight? Who knows. . .but he's DOMINANT at any weight he chooses. Paul Williams is a phenom, and despite his only loss to Carlos Quintana (which he avenged via KO1) he's easily the most feared, avoided fighter in the ring today.
LegUpPhotos > "LATE 70's/EARLY 80's HEAVIES" by Chris Guzman (2008) Larry Holmes, Gerry Cooney, Ken Norton, and Ron Lyle were all big hitters in the heavyweight division during this time period. Lyle signed the original by his image, as did Cooney, but Holmes signed it by Lyle's face, claiming that he "didn't want to mess up his part of the painting". I'll get Norton to sign it this year at the IBHOF Induction Weekend. . . . .
LegUpPhotos > "EASTON ASSASSIN" by Chris Guzman (2008) Close-up image taken from the painting entitled "LATE 70'S/EARLY 80'S HEAVIES", of which Holmes was clearly the most dominant. Holmes defended the world heavyweight championship more times than anyone except Joe Louis. Some fighters don't have CAREERS that last seven years, and Larry was CHAMPION that long!
LegUpPhotos > LAMON BREWSTER KO'S KLITSCHKO by Chris Guzman. "Relentless" Lamon Brewster knocks out Wladimir Klitschko to win the WBO Heavyweight Championship of the World. I really enjoy the color contrasts in this piece.
LegUpPhotos > LURKING TYSON by Chris Guzman. This is more of a "lurking" Tyson image. . . . just waiting for the bell to ring.
LegUpPhotos > OSCAR/MANNY by Chris Guzman. (unsigned) This is a shot of the OSCAR/MANNY painting, before Pacquiao signed it. If prints are to be made, it will be of this shot.
