SportsImages > LegUpPhotos  > Art > Boxing Art By Chris Guzman
I've always loved boxing for it's purity. True, the business end is highly tarnished, but once that bell rings, it's just one man against one man. My goal with this series of works is to capture the persona of the fighter as a person, not just as a pitchman or advertising image. Sometimes I think I get as much enjoyment out of seeing the fighters' reaction to the painting as I get from actually creating it. I usually approach them unannounced at a press conference or Hall of Fame engagement. . . .their face when they realize that someone took the time to immortalize their image in a piece of artwork is worth all the hours of painting, traveling, and waiting. More times than not, the fighter wants to HAVE the piece, rather than autograph it for me, which was my initial intention; to make a truly unique autograph showpiece. I've often considered that the piece isn't complete until the subject actually "endorses" it with their personal autograph. Lately, I've been commissioning pieces for the personal collections of these awesome warriors. . . we'll see where this takes me. Thanks for looking, Chris Guzman

LOOK FOR MY LATEST PIECES: Of course, my radio show will be represented at the International Boxing Hall of Fame Induction Weekend the second weekend in June for Lewis's induction. I will be selling prints of my "LENNOX: Undisputed" piece at the Canastota High School Boxing Memorabilia Show on Saturday, June 13. Also, prints of "PAUL WILLIAMS" and my table full of hand-painted boxing gloves will be stuffed to the gills with good deals on original art. . . .perfect for autographs from the boxing celebrities present during the weekend. See you there! CG

LegUpPhotos > STEVE FORBES by Chris Guzman. Steve "2-Pound" Forbes is the former lightweight champion of the world, and is probably best known for his dominant role in "The Contender" tv series in 2007. As the runner-up to Grady Brewer in the series finale, Forbes showed his abilities in grand fashion. Forbes also received some notoriety for being chosen as an opponent for Oscar dela Hoya in early 2008, fighting hard, impressing everyone ringside, as well as those watching from home.
LegUpPhotos > RIDDICK BOWE by Chris Guzman. Riddick "Big Daddy" Bowe. . .two-time heavyweight champion of the world. Bowe has only a single loss on his professional record (to Holyfield) and after a lengthy absence from the ring, is ready to try again to become champion. His wars with Holyfield are truly legendary.
LegUpPhotos > SHANNON BRIGGS by Chris Guzman. Shannon "The Cannon" Briggs is a former heavyweight champion of the world, whose fights with Lennox Lewis, George Foreman, and Sergei Liakhovich will be remembered forever. His size is matched only by his heart, both inside and outside of the ring.
LegUpPhotos > IRON MIKE TYSON by Chris Guzman. What can be said about "The Baddest Man on the Planet" that hasn't already been said? Mike Tyson is the stuff nightmares are made of, and his imprint was clearly left on the heavyweight division when he completely cleared it out like never before during his championship reign in the late 80's.
LegUpPhotos > LAMON BREWSTER by Chris Guzman. "Relentless" Lamon Brewster is the former WBO Heavyweight Champion. The original is hand-autographed by Lamon, and I have since started work on a commissioned piece for his personal collection.
LegUpPhotos > DIEGO CORRALES by Chris Guzman. Diego "Chico" Corrales was a former multi-weight champion who brought his "never back up" approach to professional prizefighting in the late 90's and early 00's. His first battle with Jose Luis Castillo is still one of the greatest fights I've ever witnessed. Corrales was unfortunately killed in a motorcycle accident recently, sending shockwaves throughout the entire boxing world.
LegUpPhotos > FLOYD PATTERSON by Chris Guzman. His accomplishments speak for themselves. 1952 Helsinki Olympics Gold Medalist. Youngest (at the time) Heavyweight Champion of the World. First man to regain heavyweight title after losing it. Wars with Archie Moore, Ingemar Johannson, Cassius Clay, George Chuvalo, and countless others during the Heavyweight Boom, as well as his incredible heart and attitude made him a Hall of Fame member and dignitary for the sport of boxing.
LegUpPhotos > VINNY PAZ by Chris Guzman. Vinny "Paz" Pazienza. . . always colorful, always exciting, and always left EVERYTHING in the ring, each and every time. Paz loves his fans, and lets them know it at piles of speaking engagements he participates in annually.
LegUpPhotos > OSCAR/MANNY by Chris Guzman. (Signed by Pacquiao) Billed as "The Dream Match". . . Oscar dela Hoya will fight Manny "PacMan" Pacquiao on December 6, 2008. Pacquiao is considered pound-for-pound the best fighter in the world, but Oscar is the naturally bigger man, with plenty more experience. This painting accompanied me to the press conference in Chicago, where Pacquiao was kind enough to autograph it for me, across his chest.
